Description

A delicious twist on the classic sloppy joes featuring layers of cheese and savory ground beef, perfect for sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 4 sandwich rolls or thick slices of bread
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add Vegetables: Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic to the beef. Cook until vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the bottom halves of the sandwich rolls on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture onto each slice.
  5. Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the beef mixture. Place the other bread halves on top, and then add a slice of cheese over each sandwich.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, until the cheese melts and the bread is slightly toasted.
  7. Garnish: Remove from the oven and sprinkle with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey for a leaner version.
  • For a crispier texture, lightly butter the bread before assembling the sandwich.
  • Serve with a side of coleslaw or a crisp salad for a complete meal.
